Lucie

Dear Decathletes:

We have previously discussed how Dickens always comes up with original names for his characters--like Jerry Cruncher.

Sometimes he uses a name to tell the reader something about the significance of the character's role in the novel. Accordingly, has anybody given any thought to the meaning of Lucie Manette's name? (I am specifically referring to her first name).

Use your linguistic skills and see if you can identify and significance.

  1. Lucie is similar to luz, which means light in Spanish. She is the light that guides Dr. Manette after his imprisonment.

  2. The name Lucie has the word "Luc" which could be short for luck. This could represent that Lucie is good luck to Dr. Manete specially since Ms. Manetearrived in her fathers life he has become more social. This can also be proven by a quote from the book "She was rhe golden thread that united him to a Past beyond his misery, and to a Present beyond his misery." The part were it says that she helps Dr. Manete past his memory is similar to stating that she is source of his mental growth. Also in the case of Charles Darnae she did help Darnae when she was brought to stand

  3. hm.. well i looked up the meaning on a birth name website x]

and its french for luck or illumination.

probably because she is the person that really turns around the life of Mr. Manette, and Mrs. Darnay. and helped Mr. Carton by listening to him.
    and her "golden hair"
